Under direction, performs professional public library work. Work is performed independently according to prescribed
procedures. This position is supervisory in nature and the employee’s recommendations on subordinate personnel
decisions, including hiring and firing, carry particular weight in the decision making process. Position has potential for
Administrative advancement.
  • Directs, supervises and initiates personnel actions for assigned subordinates; conducts performance evaluations on subordinate personnel;
  • Develops and makes recommendations on policies and procedures within assigned areas;
  • Develops and makes recommendations on departmental goals and objectives;
  • Assists with the preparation, monitoring, and maintenance of a budget within assigned areas;
  • Analyzes and evaluates data, creates and maintains records and reports, as required;
  • Remains abreast of developments in the library profession by reading professional journals, attending workshops and conventions, as required;
  • Speaks and serves as a liaison for civic, educational and other interested groups;
  • Performs other related duties as required.
Librarian III-Adult Services performs the following additional duties involving the management of all library services to adults and serves as head of reference:
  • Development and maintenance of adult fiction, non-fiction, reference, periodical and AV collections;
  • Planning and producing programs for adults;
  • Reads and reviews new books and makes recommendations for acquisition of books and materials within assigned area;
  • Orders and catalogs books and materials;
  • Provides reference and reader's advisory service and community relations;
  • Assists patrons with Online Public Catalog and reference tools;
  • Writes and produces media releases, brochures, posters and displays for special programs;
  • Other related duties as required.
Librarian III – Public Services Librarian performs these additional duties involving the overall management & supervision of the library’s public information/telecommunication services, circulation desk & automation system:
  • Measures system efficiency and effectiveness against established standards and makes adjustments as needed for proper dissemination of information;
  • Develops instructional materials for departmental training;
  • Trains users and coordinates staff programs for user training to equip public with skills necessary to retrieve and manage information;
  • Prepares survey instruments to assess and resolve issues related to products, user needs, and information access;
  • Manages the circulation desk operation by setting service priorities to ensure efficiency and effectiveness;
  • Manages the library’s automated system and serves as vendor liaison for the system;
  • Develops and updates circulation system and public use policy for compliance with professional standards;
  • Prepares and implements special exhibits, displays and community programs;
  • Prepares media releases and publicity for library programs;
  • Prepares departmental and service designated proposals for review.
Other Job Functions: 
  • Assesses the outcome of information use to solve information management problems through policy and system function;
  • Maintains currency in library’s retrieval system
  • Interfaces design to ensure most effective catalog search results;
  • Monitors public catalog searches for potential user issues with database;
  • Studies patron population to account for challenged information seekers and diverse information needs in database interfaces;
  • Critically evaluates information resources and tools.
  • Assists the City in the preparation for and aftermath of a major emergency such as a hurricane or other storm or disaster; other related duties as required 
  • Knowledge, Abilities, and Skills –
  • Knowledge:
  • Knowledge of the principles, practices, and methods of library science; knowledge of modern English, spelling and
  • mathematics; extensive knowledge of reader interest levels, books, and authors for youth of a variety of ages
  • Adult Services/Reference Librarian - Extensive knowledge of reference and adult services
  • Public Services Librarian – Extensive knowledge of current and emerging information technologies; knowledge of the
  • content and structure of a variety of databases; knowledge of research and evaluation techniques; knowledge of needs
  • assessments, user analysis and publicity, display, and exhibit techniques
Ability to plan, organize and direct the activities of others; ability to express oneself clearly and concisely in verbal and written form; ability to assemble, organize and analyze data findings and report them in the context of oral or written reports; ability to establish and maintain effective working, advisory and consulting relationships with clubs, community groups, public officials and professional colleagues and the general public; ability to remain at a city work shelter before, during and after a hurricane of other storm or disaster, if asked
Public Services Librarian – Ability to respond to diverse and varied users in evaluating performance measures and interface design for information retrieval systems; ability to understand major information and telecommunications policy issues; ability to respond to challenges related to access rights, proprietary rights and privacy rights; ability to anticipate trends in information retrieval systems and respond pro-actively and economically
Public Services Librarian – Skill in instructing users to identify, retrieve, critically evaluate and manage information; skill in properly connecting constitutional and statutory provisions, domestic laws and federal regulations and balancing differences between information professionals and the general public
Working Hours -40 hours per week. Hours range from 9:00 am/11:00 am to 6:00 pm/8:00 pm.
Physical Demands -
This is primarily sedentary work with some periods of light physical effort. Requires walking short distances; sitting for long periods of time; standing, reaching and bending; occasional lifting up to 35 pounds and occasional carrying/pushing/pulling up to 35 pounds; good finger/hand dexterity and hand/eye coordination; good eyesight, hearing and speech; driving a vehicle, as needed.
Minimum Qualifications -
Master's Degree in Library Science or Information Studies from an ALA accredited school and a minimum of five (5) years
professional public library experience; experience with automated systems and Internet required. Valid Florida Driver's
License with an acceptable driving record is required
Salary Range – $38,464.80 - $58,822.50/yr (DOQ); EXCELLENT benefits (Note: Benefits information is posted on the city website at, or call Human Resources at 352-483-5472). Only applicants with the most job-related qualifications will be selected for interview and further consideration. Additional consideration may be given to applicants with more extensive education, training, or experience. Final candidates may be required to pass a drug test and are offered a conditional offer of employment contingent upon satisfactory results of a thorough background check including criminal history, driver’s license check, & medical exam (if applicable).
